  • Superb. Delicious. Light to medium body with loads of plush but sophisticated fruit. Plum hidden beneath red fruit. Awesome at the price point. Light touch not like other douro reds at all - consistent with with my tasting so far. Dirk smashes it. (Had a few; tried with Quinta da bastilia old vines 2016 similar price point which was classically plum driven own right). Not especially complex which is also my exp so far is these wines - do they need more age? (Obvs this is v young) or does age do nothing for development of complexity?

  • The fruit is sourced from and around the Quinta de Nápoles vineyards in Cima Corgo, averaging 50 to 80 years in age, interplanted mainly with Tinta Amarela, Touriga Franca and, to lesser extent, other local varieties. Harvested between 15th and 25th of September 2018. Fermented and aged for about 5 months in French oak barriques. The wine has undergone MLF. Bottled in March 2019. 12,2% alcohol, 1,4 g/l residual sugar, 5,0 g/l acidity, VA 0,5 g/l, pH 3,39 and total SO2 71 mg/l. Total production 13,000 bottles.

Very pale salmon red color. The nose feels subtly reductive with a bit restrained but also enjoyably nuanced aromas of gunpowder smoke, some cantaloupe, light zesty notes of citrus fruits, a little bit of sappy herbal spice and a mineral hint of wet stones. The wine feels dry, quite broad and slightly oily yet still only medium-bodied on the palate with bright flavors of stony minerality, some reductive smoky character, a little bit of fresh red apple, light zesty notes of ripe lemony citrus fruits, a brambly hint of raspberry and a touch of chalky minerality. The high acidity keeps the wine wonderfully in balance and there even seems to be the tiniest hint of tannic grip as well, lending some additional sense of structure to the wine. The finish is dry, fresh and mineral with quite long flavors of crunchy red apples, some cantaloupe, light creamy notes of old oak, a little bit of sappy herbal spice and a hint of ripe raspberry.

A wonderfully fresh and sophisticated rosé that shows just the right amount of reduction: enough to lend a lovely smoky note that counterpoints the fresh fruit nuances without making the wine stuffy. This is surprisingly fresh, light-bodied and precise for a Douro wine, standing as a real testament to Dirk Niepoort's vision of making wines of real freshness and finesse in this hot corner of Portugal known mainly for their hardy fortified wines, weighty reds and often rather tropical whites. Most likely this wine is a mere baby and will continue to improve for many years more - even if it is drinking quite wonderfully already now, especially with a bit of aeration.
