  • A number of years ago I made a study of wine made from the Gamay grape. When I say I studied Gamay wine, I really mean that I drank a lot of Beaujolais. I did homework and everything. I maxed out the ten Crus Beaujolais and Beaujolais-Villages and so on. For extra credit, I did multiple years of Nouveau Beaujolais.

Recently, I opened a bottle of 2017 Gamay Noir from WillaKenzie. I live in the heart of Pinot Noir country in Oregon, so this was a bit out of the norm for the Willamette Valley. What a delight. Big and juicy. Cherries and plums. If it came in jars I would spread it on toast.

This wine was not particularly complicated as it did not take a lot of sips to decipher. Oak flavors were hardly noticeable. We drank this wine with a chopped salad but next time I’ll try grilled chicken. Gamay, nicely done.
