  • Day 1 (94 pts): strawberries that are just starting to soften, raspberries. Flowers and earth? Rocks? Saved half a bottle for the second date. This makes no sense, but it feels like if I were drinking a ruby that was starting to soften and age. Half a bottle saved for tomorrow, excited for round 2.

Day 2 (93 pts): more cranberry and pomegranate. Fruit is giving way to savory. I see that the elements are the same, but it's just a different wine than last night.

Day 4 (94 pts): back to day 1, just a bit more mellow fruit and savory. The food we ate with the wine on day 2 may have thrown everything off.

  • No decant, followed over 2 days. What a striking difference compared to the regular 2017 Temperance Hill Pinot. A pronounced sweetness on the nose leads to a quite concentrated aroma of raspberry, orange pith, and spice. Herbs, incense, and crushed rocks emerge by day 2, and the palate is consistent, supported by weightless texture. A memorable bottle.

This is more open and giving than the regular Temperance Hill, and quite a step up in density, fruit, and presence. The fruit profile however is more bright and red toned. Like the other 2017s this could use more time to open up the aromas and hopefully continue to develop that texture.

  • Tasting with Megan and Marcus

A savory nose with forest berry, loam, and great herbal notes. Midweighted on the palate with a sense of depth and power delivered with grace. More of the same fruit and savory notes on the palate with a heme/ferrous undertone. Excellent acidity in balance with it all. Youthfully outstanding and more expressive than the last time I had this in 2020. Lovely.

  • Showed very well. Still has a leafy herbal note which I assume is whole cluster influence to integrate. Red fruited, quite savory and spicy. Acidity is a bit prominent coming across as rather edgy. Quite good, but needs some time to soften and integrate. Dynamite floral aromatics.

  • Opened it just before lunch with the idea of letting it breathe for a few hours until dinner. Upon first taste though, it ended up being really accessible right out of the gate, so it became the wine for lunch instead. Briefly decanted it while lunch finished up.

A very different side of Temperance Hill compared to the 2018 Upper Bench drank recently. Open and inviting from begining. The fruit is just ripe with deliciously juicy acidity. White strawberries, tart cherries, and raspberries. Lightly roasted coffee, sage and bristled pine. A gerridae in wine form. Light, airy, effortless, but tons on tension beneath the surface.

    ABV: 13.7%
