  • Wife said it was well balanced, prefers other styles, like the same wine 2009 vintage we had in12/11 that showed creme brule with notes of eucalyptus, lighter wine this time with lemon and hints of mint, would recommend to friends.

  • Well structured, good acidity, medium weight, 13.5% abv, muted nose at first, much better after it opens up a bit, lemon meringue pie upfront, mid-palate shows notes of eucalyptus and pine, great with a rich meal.

  • My Version of a Triple-Double

No, I’m not talking basketball here; not even any sports what-so-ever, this has to do with an interesting evening I had, actually two evenings, with a really great wine:

Fort Ross Vineyard Chardonnay - Fort Ross Vineyard - Fort Ross-Seaview AVA 2017

See the tripling thing there? “Fort Ross” listed three times! The doubling thing is pretty easy as well, I had the wine over two evenings so I had two dinners; not surprising I suppose, is that they were both made of Salmon, so not just two dinner but two of the same dinners; that puts it a little more in line with the sports definition, well, at least for me, and I was glad to have extended the pleasure of both over those days.

As for the food; the first day was Salmon and Asparagus with a Lemon Panko Crumb Topping (wonderful) the other was Salmon with Rice and Broccoli and a Lemon Butter Sauce (also yummy), and as lemons were on sale, you know they had to play a major role. On to the wine.

Starting with a deep golden color signifying the depth of the wine in the glass along with butterscotch and citrus notes on the nose, the wine, when sipped, shows a slight creaminess with apple and that same butterscotch flavor that launches the wine into a long spice-filled finish. As many of you may know, with a wine like this it is best not to serve too cold, let this warm up a little if you had it in the fridge too long, else you lose some of the savoriness. A beautiful wine worthy of a recent 94 Point review.

Fort Ross Vineyard & Winery produces limited quantities of single vineyard, Estate grown, cool-climate Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Pinotage, and in January 2012, Fort Ross Vineyard became part of the new Fort Ross-Seaview American Viticultural Area (AVA). Their vineyard located at the far southern end of the AVA and only a mile from the Pacific Coast. At elevations of 1,200 feet and above, on steep and sloping terrain, each of which has its own soil makeup, the grapes are handpicked and sorted and whole-cluster pressed, the juice then aged 10 months in 100% French oak; 25% new, bottled unfined and unfiltered with only a scant 316 cases produced The winemaking is done by their winemaker, Jeff Pisoni, who came to Fort Ross as winemaker in 2009 working at other wineries such as Peter Michael and Bernardus and also started making wine full-time with his family under his own label as well.

So a basketball fan or not, if you are a wine fan, or fanatic such as I (or is that me?) this is a great wine to seek out or, if need be, order direct from the winery. Maybe you can make your own Triple-Double!

    Cheers

  • Creamy apple pear. Straw and pine needles. A bit tart. Uncertain on long term potential despite WS’ score.
