  • My first of a case. Best after 2hr decant .. but like most WA Shiraz it is certainly approachable even now.

  • The makers of this Aussie Syrah, not Shiraz, are certainly right to say, as per the back label, that this is "definitive in style to the more savoury /spicy flavour spectrum." This is not the typical in-your-face Shiraz that for a long time characterized so much Aussie wine but rather a reserved, elegant Syrah that presents a seemingly pure, unadulterated expression of the varietal in its rather more traditional French idiom. Indeed, this comes across to me like essential Northern Rhone Syrah, with the cherry and blackberry fruit very much taking a back seat to the black pepper, cured meat, and herbs. While the pepper is quite prominent, it's not a hugely expressive wine. It unfolds slowly, quietly, the nose remaining subtle and unobtrusive, and there's enough lurking in the background to suggest this might be a couple of years away from its peak, though it's certainly drinking extremely well now despite, or perhaps because of, it's overall reservedness. And it's just $22 in Ontario? It's hard to find such fantastic value. You certainly can't find it in the Northern Rhone. Say what you will about all that overblown Aussie Shiraz. This is a new take that takes us right back to what it's supposed to be.

  • Vanilla oak upfront which fades to reveal a black pepper wrapped, blackberry fruit nose. Full-bodied with a rich, supple texture; notable acid, but it's well balanced against the fruit. Spicy finish.
