Love VV. Fruit forward, full body, black cherry and ripe. Velvety, structured with balance and long finish. Gardenia with white pepper on the backend. 3 hour decant. Really hard to not drink it and let it develop. Good now with rest.

Writing this note a few days later so no formal notes. Served blind next to a 2018 Outpost True, 2018 Kinsman La Voleuse, and a 2018 Carter Carter. All wines were double decanted 6 hours in advance of tasting. My least favorite on the 23rd, this wine was massive, tannic and bone dry. I have a half a bottle to finish in the coming days and I will update my note as needed. Well made wine, but would benefit with more time or air.

2018 Houyi Head to Head VV and Realm. Both wines slow ox’d for 4 hours. Paired with Japanese bbq. Realm was the winner on the night with a more open knit and fruit forward profile. VV showed a lot more structure and remained somewhat closed on the night, did pair nicely with lamb. VV may be the winner over the long haul, both excellent but 2018 Realm Houyi continues to be one of my favorite from the vintage thus far.

Nose: [58°] Dark undergrowth, dusty and slightly spiced oak, subtle dark red fruits, pencil lead dust, smooth stone/minerals and damp black mulch.
Palate: [58°] Ripe black fruit, pleasantly spiced oak, tree bark, intense black earth with black mulch and carries onto the finish with some dark minerals. The spice holds up throughout and it's quite enjoyable.
Attributes: Clear dark ruby. Dry with medium to medium-plus amounts of fine but grainy tannin. Medium to medium-plus body with medium to medium-plus acidity. Good finish of at least 16-18 seconds.
Thoughts: The spice here is very pleasant, it's not too much but also not too soft. There's a water/pond aspect to this which I'm not sure how to really explain. With time, the spice calms down just a bit but continues to finish with a clean earthy/mineral streak with a noticeable yet pleasant spice. I don't exactly want to compare this to the Steltnzer vineyard but in a sense this was a bit more soft and mellow compared to that. The spice straight from the pour was more intriguing initially compared to a few hours later after letting it sit out at cellar temp. Maybe wait for 2-3 years before enjoying.
Other notes: Bordeaux glass. Slow-ox'ed in bottle at cellar temp ~55° for the duration of consumption over 4 hours, recommend drinking straight from the bottle and let it decant at cellar temp over the course of consumption.
