This is a unique wine. It benefits from 60 minutes of decanting but is simply delicious to drink. It is fruity and light with low tannins but good balance. The smell is a little off putting for me with a deep earthiness (mushrooms and forest floor) combined with a smoky leather aroma. But the flavors are excellent to my pallet.

Enjoyed with French Onion soup, roast prime rib, duck rillettes, and other related goodies. This is a really nice, but atypical Pinot Noir. That being said, it is a very nice wine with a lovely balance of fruit, herbs, and minerality. The tannins are present but definitely a background note. The nose is an interesting combination of earth and fruit. Nice clean finish. The only negative, and it's a minor one, is that the alcohol makes itself felt throughout. If I had another bottle, I'd let it sit for a few more years and see if the overall balance improves. Not sure this is good enough to support its price, but we received it as a gift, so....

I have been trying lots of Pinot Noir this year and wanted to have a Kistler as a reference point. On the one hand it was fun to drink with a welcoming fruity flavor profile and good depth. on the other hand this really didn’t strike me as a pinot noir per se; I guess one could say ‘not varietally correct’ which sounds snobby but I think applies in this situation. I bet in a blind tasting you could put this next to a lighter and well-made syrah or GSM and it wouldn’t be obvious which is which. So glad to have tried it but likely a pass in the future especially given the price.

Marvelous. Everything coming together flawlessly. Bright fruits. Perfect earthiness. At its peak.
