There is a lot of value to be found in the North Coast AVA. The 2017 Dropout Carignan from Colombini Vineyard is one such example. This is a fresh take on what traditionally has been a major blending grape from the Mediterranean. The AVA has its share of standalone Carignan producers; e.g., a few of my faves include Baxter, Coturri, Frick, and Seghesio. This one is a lighter style. Translucent eggplant in color. Pure fruit aromas -- especially plum and raspberry -- mix with moist earth (thank you, jonbishop321) in a lively manner that is sheer delight to inhale. Good acidity both quenches the thirst and refreshes the palate, en route to a very friendly finish. Balanced, light on its feet, and a good food companion. The 15% abv is really not noticeable. Neither are the tannins. Drink now.
