This fresh and pure Sauvignon Blanc is fantastic, balancing fulness and typicity like very few domestic SBs. The Mekerra doesn't lean too much towards austerity and zippiness, but it also doesn’t indulge the peachy and oily traits that so often come with CA winemaking. Maybe it’s working at elevation in Knights Valley, similar to Peter Michael (one of my other favorite SBs), but this is a wine of real class, which should even better in 6-18 months.
Light yellow in color and medium in body, the wine offers intriguing aromas of wet grass, lemon peel, and crushed rock. Flavors of ruby red grapefruit, quince, and lime, with an incredible finish that is lively, creamy, and everything in between. Even thought this sees decent oak (20 months in 65% new), the integration here is off the charts. Hat tip to csimm for recommending the 2016. This wine is something special (as it should be at this price), and I can’t wait to try another one in a year or so. 14.8% alcohol.

Pineapple and grapefruit. Initially tart and smooths out with time.
