  • Great, but not that complex

  • Un vin qui fait penser à du Porto. Des arômes plus complexes néanmoins, de la noix, du boisé, moins liquoreux qu'un vin cuit. Intéressant pour accompagner un dessert mais peut-être un peu trop riche à l'apéritif.

  • Bottling date unknown, but my records show that I bought this in 1997, so probably some 20 years in bottle. Semi Dulce Muy Viejo, 20% ABV. Pale tawny colour; the nose is initially rather dusty and (salted) caramelly, but with some oxygen the dust opens up to a note of boudoir powder and the caramel to nuts and candied red fruit, good depth; the palate is juicy and lively, medium-sweet, with intense fruit-and-nut flavours; caramel finish, crème patisserie, very good length. It's a nice wine, but a bit monolithic and not nearly as good as the bottle tasted in 2012. I guess it gradually fades when it spends a long time in the bottle.

  • Iberian-Madeiran fortified mini flight: (Bottle opened 24.09.2015):
Colour: Medium brown, very slight haze.
Nose: Elements of wood polish and black tea, some honey, dried citrus peel.
Taste: Medium sweet to off-dry. Medium to medium light bodied. Some dryness (tannins?) towards the finish.
Aftertaste: Medium short to medium. Markedly less notable aftertaste than the 20 YO Terrantez and Apostoles Palo Cortado (but has also stayed open for more than twice as long). Not as interesting now as over the first month or two, indicating that after opening it keeps more like a sherry than like a Madeira.

  • (Solera aged, 20% ABV, made from 70% Garnacha Tinta and 30% Garnacha Blanca)
Dark amber, towards cola colour. A bit woody (old wood) and alcoholic nose with some dried figs, raisins and wood polish. In the mouth it's medium sweet, cut through by an almost Madeira like acidity. Long finish, with a lot of acidity and quite a bit of caramel.
Just like newly opened old Madeiras it seems to beg for some air to evolve and refocus. Will give this bottle some time to breath and then revisit. Interesting & promising.

01.10.2015: One week after opening the nose has developed. It reminds me both of a good Madeira Boal and a good Tawny Port; sultana raisins, molasses, candied fruits. In the mouth a warm, medium sweet and quite well balanced taste. Lacking some of the "spicy minerality" of a port and some of the acidity of a good Madeira. Also somewhat less elegant than both, but it's somewehere in that neighbourhood.
