I had read in a book recently that Carmenere is an oft-forgotten and somewhat obscure Bordeaux grape that has seen something of an explosion in Chile in recent years. Indeed, the soil in climate of the Andes seem to be ideal for this particular grape, and so you can find Chilean wines made from this grape that are high in quality but only modestly priced.
Deep ruby, almost purple in color this wine is quite aromatic with green bell pepper on the nose along with a striking dark fruitiness, a prominent black raspberry overtone and some hints of black pepper. Talk about a nose! Upon sipping one is met with a medium-bodied wine with rather high acidity and moderate tannins. In terms of flavors there is raspberry accompanied by a hint of vanilla from the oak in which it was aged for 10 months. It is also quite vegetal: I taste some sort of bitter leafy greens, so I vaguely feel like I'm eating a salad. The apparent green bell pepper in the flavor further strengthens this impression. The finish is fairly long with a lingering raspberry and tannic dryness.
The nose is great, but otherwise it isn't the world's most complex wine. The flavor is rather vegetal, so I could see this going with veggie dishes quite nicely. The acid and tannins will make it stand up nicely to beef, too. Stuffed green bell peppers, anyone?

Good example. Deep ruby, med plus intensity. Cranberry, coffee, plum mint. Strawberry, chicolate green pepper Developing Med acid, med minus tannin high alcohol long finish. Outstanding but will not buy.

Not impressed for what Chile has to offer in terms of quality and value but I thought it was balanced. Might need a couple more years in cellar.
