2017 BC Red Blends on Blueback (Vancouver Island): part of a blind tasting of 2017 BC Meritage blends. Brick Garnet. Nose of savoury but subtle dark red fruits with notes of tobacco. Stewed and dried dark red berries. A bit herbaceaous and olive and espresso. Medium weight. Balanced and reminiscent of Old World Bordeaux. Medium plus finish. First of three flights. Ranked 3rd by group; 1st by me. Classic but aging quickly. Decant and drink up.
A small production Cab/ Merlot blend from British Columbia, Canada. On nose: toasted coconut, vanilla / oak and ripe blackberries. On palate: all above flavours enhanced, as well as light tannins, cassis, pipe tobacco, and Kona coffee....a big, bold steak wine....very New World, not especially complex, high alcohol( 15% !) ....but after a 2 hour decant , was quite pleasing ....good BBQ wine .
