Kathy and I walked through the vineyards with a glass in our hand. It's late summer in Oregon's wine country, so the view from on high is spectacular. We stop every few hundred yards while someone fills our glass with wine sourced from wherever we’re standing. A Vineyard Hike. How cool is that?
The walk up the Estate passes alongside hundreds of rows of grapes. Mostly Pinot Noir. The view across the Yamhill-Carlton AVA stretches out below. Vineyards dot the landscape. Country roads twist and curve through the valley. It’s almost fall, can’t be too long until harvest.
A vineyard map shows which specific clones of Pinot Noir are planted for each vineyard plot. Impressive. And so is the 2017 Kiana Pinot Noir that’s currently in my glass. It’s all there: dark fruit, quite fresh, with a clear influence of oak but not overdone. Slightly floral. Oddly, I was getting distinct flavors of hay, but then I realized I was standing next to a freshly cut plot of dry grass. Nice. The hike continues….
