  • 11,5% alcohol.

Translucent, pale cherry red color with a thin, colorless rim. Developed and quite tertiary nose with aromas of wizened black cherries, some cherry juice, a little bit of pruney dark fruits, light damp notes of papier-mâché, sweet hints of cloves and exotic spices and a meaty touch of game. The wine is clean, moderately developed and medium-bodied on the palate with flavors of sour cherries, bloody meat, some crunchy cranberries, light sweet notes of wizened dark berries, a hint of leather and a touch of cloves. The structure relies mostly on the high acidity, as the light, textural tannins feel fully resolved. The finish is long, clean and crunchy with no tannic grip whatsoever and bright flavors of cranberries, sour cherry bitterness, some brambly raspberries, a little bit of leather, light sweet notes of wizened dark berries and a hint of tobacco.

A wonderfully developed, fresh and crunchy Spanna at its apogee. The wine feels quite mature now, at 52 years of age, but doesn't really show any signs of going downhill yet. Based on the assumption that the wine must've shown some tannic grip in youth (it is a Nebbiolo, after all) the tannins have evolved to a point where they are completely imperceptible, but the wine still retains good sense of firmness and structure, thanks to the high acidity and relatively lithe body. I guess alcohol plays quite little part in the aging potential of these wines, seeing how well this has evolved despite being only 11,5% in alcohol. No point in aging this since it is drinking so well right now and I doubt it will get any better from here.
