Château Lafon-Rochet, Saint-Estèphe, 2017: When I first tasted the previous kosher cuvée, from the glorious 2010 vintage (the only kosher classed growth of that vintage), I thought it was a perfect example of what wine geeks refer to as Parker-style: a great, massive wine, which features bold, ripe fruit and a noticeable, unapologetic oak frame. The 2017 could hardly be more different. Deep garnet in color. On the nose, aromas of cassis, black cherries, pencil lead, nutmeg, a drop of smoke and cigar box. Medium to full-bodied, medium concentration, with an elegant, silky texture. The palate shows black fruit with tart black currants, juicy black cherries, graphite, a drop of saline, earthy minerals, tobacco leaves, medium-plus acidity, hints of black licorice, a touch of thyme, with a strong frame of firm, grainy tannins and notes of 70% cocoa chocolate that linger on a seemingly endless finish. Very elegant, restrained wine with a substantial structure, needs lots of time. 13% Abv. Drink 2026-2039, maybe longer. 93-94
