Community Tasting Notes (3) Avg Score: 94.5 points

  • Minerality was clear on the nose and palate. Very structured and held up, improving with air and consecutive days (3 in total) in terms of smoothness and refinement. Grateful to have found one of the last bottles available, at what seems to be a bargain 128 NZD.

Addendum: fully agreed with Tony Ling and if he hadn’t posted on the cusp of the event, the little brother Pisa Terrace would have made the table instead for NZ Burgundian Wine Night, 25 Nov at my place

  • PNP into Riedel Yoichi glass (“Leaf” day): Pale purplish garnet to the eyes.

Dried leafy, herbal infused purplish ruby cherry. Hint of smoke and minty.

Quite a light-footed effort here. Good balance but dryness on the tannin.

    94 points.

With time and half bottle left: very complex and detailed white peppery to the nose with better fruits.

  • The End of the Golden Weather: a pre-COVID-19 Visit to Central Otago in Autumn 2020: From an east-facing 5 ha site (effectively 3.2 ha) at the foot of Mount Pisa on gravely, mineral, well-drained soil with quartz and schist. Whole bunch 5% and new oak 0%. Like a reserve wine, priced higher than the Pisa Terrace. Under screwcap. A deeper, darker colour. A slightly deeper, darker bouquet. Also, a little more opulent black fruit on the nose. Black currants, cassis, black plums and a little musk. Some nascent dark florals. To drink, the more concentrated and powerful wine of the two. A little darker fruited, more crème de cassis with a tarry, iron element. A step up in quality, concentration and complexity. But the L'Insolite is still really clean and pure and quite elegant and refined. At this stage, unsurprisingly, the L'Insolite is a little more closed than the Pisa Terrace. Ideally, give it another 2+ years and drink over the next 10+ years.
