  • Violet ruby color. Medium heavy density with some edge thinning. Nose is dusty and herbal with dark berry fruits driving the aromas. The palate is dark cherry and blueberry on a well balanced acidic spine. Well rounded soft tannins drive a flat savory fruit profile to a medium long finish.

  • KFWV tasting. 41% Syrah, 22% carignan, 20% Mourvèdre, 8% Grenache, 7% tannat, and 2% viogner, sourced from the Galilee region, this is an Israeli twist on the French RhOne/GSM blend. Each wine was matured individually for 7 months, then blended and aged together for another 8 months in French oak barrels, this wine is not mevushal and is 15% ABV. Appearance is beautiful medium ruby with purple edging and medium to high viscosity. The nose was high intensity and surprisingly ripe and red fruity, almost like a Zinfandel. A hint of blackberry, but mostly red fruit, raspberries, lots of ripe strawberry jam, maraschino cherries, fruit punch, lavender, fennel, cured meat, and cinnamon. The palate does a complete 180 from the nose and is much more earthy. Medium bodied and polished, leathery tannins, and good acidity. Dark fruits this time heavily influenced by the tannins, cassis and blackberries, a hint of black olive, black tea, potting soil, asphalt, tobacco, coffe, and dark chocolate. The finish is really long, layered and complex, mostly dark chocolate, but the fruits are still present. Carmel does a great job of embracing lesser known grapes that thrive in the Israeli climate and terroir, rather than forcing wines that sell well but don’t do well in the Israeli climate. Wines like this should be the future of Israeli winemaking. 90-91.
