  • tasted @Vancouver International Wine Festival 2023: quite fresh, a fine mix of red and black fruits, high acidity and spicy finish. Good wine. - 89 points

  • Upon first opening:
Alcohol quite evident on the nose. There are hints of cherry, dark berries, earth, and maybe some licorice. Overall the nose is quite reticent.
The palate opens warmly -perhaps from the alcohol- and offers notes of licorice, a hint of vanilla, and tart berries at the end with a lingering mild earthy bitterness.
Feels backwards right now. Maybe some time decanting will help.
    Initial rating: 84

    Second glass, 1 hour decant:
Things are arranged more appropriately now. The nose has also opened up to reveal what I can only call "mixed berry fruit leather", a slight smokiness, and forest floor.
The palate starts with umami earthiness, then hits that berry fruit leather, picks up a toasty vanilla note along the way, and ends with a gently tannic finish balanced by an acidic lift.
All in all, this really isn't that bad! $8 for the bottle makes the deal all the sweeter. I'm raising the rating a few points to 87.

    Day 2, final glass:
It has held up fairly well. A mushroom funk has crept into the nose and fore-palate, which is not displeasing, and the berries, tannins, & acid have mellowed in tandem a touch. A pleasant sipper before dinner. Rating remains the same.

  • Dry easy to drink. Great QPR. Medium tannins and acid. Seems to have a more red fruit than black fruit. Stewed strawberry, dark plum, leather, minerality. The oak was slightly hidden.
Opens up after about 35-45 minutes Medium length finish. Would buy again.
