Seldom do I encounter a 20 year-old premium Napa bottling whose structure has collapsed as this wine. Not unpleasant to drink, but lacking any distinctive character as it offers up a short, almost perfunctory progression of mixed berry and sassafras notes and a finish of dried leaf. Added nothing to a seared Prime New York strip, other than a wish I had opened a fresher wine.

Decanted 30 minutes before first sip. There wasn't much to it at all. Fruit was washed out and the tannins were acerbic. Had it at an Election Night tasting along with a 1997 Silver Oak and a 2001 Insignia -- the Insignia blew the Darius out of the water, the Silver Oak was the runner-up. I've had younger bottles of Darius that drank much better. Don't know if you can chalk this up to the vintage or if it's indicative of a wine that doesn't age gracefully.

Very spicy but good fruit and structure. Acid minus. Medium to long finish.

It's amazing how mediocre this wine is considering how good the 02 was.

Better than other bottles but still bad value for an expensive wine.
