Deep red with slight haze. Moderate aromas of blackberry, green pepper and old oak. Dry, medium body with fresh acidity and medium tannins. Flavorful with blackberry, green pepper and apple skins. Long finish.

Opened in the bottle a few hours and then decided to decant a few more. This is nowhere near ready and not much pleasure to drink now. Hot/alcoholic with an over pronounced spice cake note taking over. Not sure what to make of this one given the Melanson, Pure Magic and Black Magic were all phenomenal.
Big improvement on the second night though still disjointed. Give it a few years.

The 2018 Tor Tierra Roja shows a somewhat-closed but nascently beautiful nose with deep raspberry notes, black pepper, and mole-like chocolate. No doubt this is big on the palate but I’m not feeling a lot of unbalanced heat.

TOR Tasting at Wheeler Farms: Fruit from the Tierra Roja vineyard seems particularly ill-suited to TOR's self-described "turn it up to 11" style. Notes of red cherries, red berries, dark chocolate, coffee, flowers, and leather, combined with the structure one could theoretically achieve from a hillside volcanic soil site, all made me long for a more classical winemaking approach. Instead, the TOR 2018 is overripe and possibly over-extracted, slightly sweet, and lacking in either the complexity that is clearly possible with this high-quality fruit or the flavor intensity of TOR's Melanson, To Kalon, or VHR. Drink over the decade following 2023.
