  • Pretty but still has a few rough edges

  • I concur with most of the previous tasting notes, but will add my own. The nose lacks nothing at all, coming on strong with sweet black fruit and plenty of earthy notes such as forest floor and tar. The palate alone is responsible for the sub 90 rating, falling short in some key areas. Oak integration is not seamless, as the barrel comes up a tad superior to the fruit. The finish is not short, but not long, and certainly does not have finesse or precision required to warrant a higher mark.

That said, I once again agree with previous notes that on a economic based overview, this is an excellent wine. I find it very hard to find a wine at this price point, that has the beautiful nose that this matured Bordeaux exhibits. 88-89

  • This was very pleasant, and for the price I think hugely worthwhile! A heady, full-on nose mixing earth and fruit in perfect combination: ripe black plums, huckleberries, with a wisp of smoke, leather, and a suggestion of shiitake mushrooms. On the palate, the fruit was still shining, and the wine was full of life. Would show really nicely with wild game, I think: elk, deer, pintail, something with a little funk and more flavor than beef.

This one's got a decent runway ahead of it yet, I'd say 5-7 years. If you prefer your fruit flavors to the fore, then drink it sooner, but those who love a savoury, mellowed-out earthy experience will just enjoy this one more and more as it ages.

  • Consistent with previous note, a very nice wine for a closeout price of $15...not so much at $40 though.

  • Fairly standard, somewhat restrained Right Bank bouquet, showing pencil lead, earthiness, herbaceousness, redcurrant, and plum. Austere yet agreeable palate, made in a traditional style. Light body, very good acid, light, dusty tannins. Earthy, with a bitters element that begins at the mid palate and lingers through a moderate finish. A solid and correct wine, though not a bell ringer. Drinking very well now. Not likely to improve with additional cellaring.
