Green bell pepper, black currant/cassis, ripe dark plums, anise, crushed red pepper on the nose. Med + intensity of aromas. It smells like everything I want in a Loire CF, with an intoxicating medium + intensity of aromas. The palate starts out great. It’s driven by dark plums and followed by black currant, tobacco and a little yeast. More sour-flavored yeast notes toward the finish alas distract from the aforementioned good and rob this of a higher score.
Medium + body, medium + acid medium tannins. There is bottle variation on these for sure. For this bottle, there is no way it would improve; but others I opened had potential for further aging.

Violet petals, blackcurrants, black cherries, darker plums, smoke. A LOT of spice on this. Yes there's the classic black pepper of Saumur-Champigny but also fennel seed, anise, allspice, dried leaves and mushroom powder. Older leather, dirt, earth and a hint of cedar round this out. Medium + body, medium tannin. Well structured. It drinks very well now; but could also go another few years.
Great pairing with Coq au Vin.
