Gamay and Famille Paquet (Chicago, IL): Served double blind. A slight bit of pyrazine/green had me initially thinking Loire red, but the tannins weren't quite right (they were definitely more nebbiolo-like). Not being so ripe and rich, I thought this could be Alto Piedmont.

Coravin. Light-plus ruby; aromatic, pine needles, strawberries, slightly funky character; palate is medium bodied, a bit richer than a Carema but not heavy, red fruited, pine needles, medium-plus tannins which are youthful, medium-plus to high acidity, fades just a bit towards the midpalate; finish is medium length despite the midpalate fade. A bit richer than I was expecting compared to some Alto Piemonte from Arpepe and Carema, and a bit more funk than pure fruited, but I love the pine needle complexity and I think it has its own character, as it should as it is a distinct region. Very nice Boca, should age well, but at this price point (~$60) it has some stiff competition even in Alto Piemonte. 91+ 30 min air: a really lovely mint compliments the pine needles. I’m reassessing… it is worth the $60, even with still competition in Alto Piemonte. This quality in burgundy would be $100-150. 2nd pour from Coravin on Day 4: Every time I come back to this it is better. The mint/pine needles are wonderful, and the combination of elegance and a bit of richness (for Alto Piemonte) is very drinkable. The early funk has either integrated or mostly disappeared. 91-92 now. Nose is gaining in complexity and has some spice like star anise, some clove. Reminds me of a Barolo Chinato now.
