Another bottle from an introductory mixed case from the Sunday Times Wine Club - as reviewed earlier. I had a similar reaction to this bottle, apart from finding the fruit a little richer and darker with the same dusty tannins but with more spice on the palate. It is perfectly OK at the initially discounted price but would not be a wine I would revisit (or try to put a number on). Better if you are prepared to open it early and wait, it was much improved next day.

Fairly easy-drinking ‘new-style’ (?) Rioja with red berry fruit. Quite prominent dusty tannins and acidity but it settled down over a few hours. It claims ‘oak-aged’ character but is not a recognised Crianza. It seems like a wine produced to have the ‘right’ descriptions but it lacks the quality and character of most wines from Muriel that I have tasted, even at the simpler end. Quite pleasant drinking after a few hours but it does not reach the advertised claims from the Sunday Times Wine Club. Examples of decent Rioja Reserva from recognised producers are available for similar prices.
