My first time trying this designation, I enjoyed this Gabilan Mts. Pinot from Joyce. The fruit was warm, red and more "Californian" than many of the Californian Pinots I've been drinking recently. It layered on cherry, vanillin, and spice with a sweetness that was in no way cloying. The wine stood up with sufficient nerve to keep it from being muddied or boring -- thanks to decent acidity and a general sense of some terroir (almost an oxymoron statement, I know). I'd say this is one for drinking over the next decade but probably doesn't require or demand serious aging to show its best. I'm excited to try some of the other Joyce lineup.
