Pop and pour. With 30 minutes of air this fleshed out into a beautifully aged, mellow Syrah. With grapes from a cool, coastal Sonoma vineyard, it's dark, savory fruit with a touch of smoke and bacon fat. I think this is fully mature so drink now.

Notes from RRV Barrel Tasting 2010: Plenty of dark fruit, with raspberry and black cherry compote notes, good balance. Excellent concentration, one wonders how such a cool climate vineyard produced a wine at this level of ripeness. Quite nice, would drink this on the earlier side.

Most of this wine was consumed on day 2 after an hour decant on day 1. Consistent with previous note: blackberry cream and bacon fat off the nose with lingonberry, cured meat, black olive, smoky black raspberry, green peppercorns and wintergreen on the palate, with a bit of iron bloody iodine giving lift in the background of an otherwise sweet-earthy finish. Medium bodied. Interesting and delicious.

COLOR - beautiful dark red, not as intense as the inkiness of a typical high-extraction Syrah. NOSE - not overpowering, but with fresh red fruits and light alcohol, with a few esters, on top. TASTE - WOW; this completely blows me away! So very mellow, this is a very well integrated Syrah with chocolate, caramel, and a creaminess I haven't tasted in a red wine, especially a Syrah, before. This is a new tasting experience (and enjoyment!) for me. RATING - 94.
