  • As I opened this bottle, I wondered about the wisdom of aging a pretty basic bottle for 15 years. And at first my fears were confirmed as this opened flat and weak, lacking both secondary complexity and any real fruit or structure. And yet, with a couple of hours, this did slowly blossom to show soft, silky, resolved fruit on a nice frame of acidity. Cocoa, smoke and earth waft from the glass. The fruit is gentle, lacking power, but making up for it with an easy softness. Certainly quite pleasant. I do feel it is firmly on the decline and probably better a few years ago.

  • Consumed across two days, this never really did much. Day one was a nice enough Merlot, good minerality, not much fruit or complexity. On day 2 this was more astringent and less interesting. A disappointing bottle.

  • Tasted at McCarthy & Schiering. This was but a brief taste of a tight young wine which had barely been open. Amidst the smoke and earth, there was already a ripe, plush core of fruit bursting out. This is quite a mouthful, much more impressive than the more reticent Chateau de Pez tasted alongside it.
