  • 90€ at a restaurant in Paris. 100% Chardonnay. It was my birthday and wanted something white, Burgundian, and old. This fit the bill. The largest producer of wines from Chablis (and one of the larger cooperatives in France) but this really hit the spot. After coaxing the cork out, this golden wine clearly has some oxidation but it works. Most of the fruit is gone, but there are hints of lemon rind on both the nose and the palate. Nutty, nuanced, and layered, this is not for the faint of heart. It’s an older Chablis. Even an *old* Chablis and while it might not have much time left, it is completely magnificent tonight.

  • This particular bottle was holding up quite well, with the color a darker straw and not quite gold; appears it was unfiltered. Aromas and flavors one would expect from this site and with this much age on it, but a little more freshness and character than one might expect, too. I was glad to have it and wish I'd poured even more. That said, it's time to drink, no way it's improving from here.

    PnP, served non-blind.

  • Quite mature with a golden hue and a bit sherried, but still intact. Big bouquet of clarified butter, bergamot, sautéed mushrooms, honey, bitter almonds, ginger. The palate is intense, plenty of acidity married with lovely richness, smooth and long. It's pros outweigh the cons, but this is better with food to take the edge off. Starting to go to seed, drink now.

  • Bright straw-gold color, green apple and minerals in the nose, med- to full-bodied with a nice creaminess to the texture, but no flab. Very mineral-driven on the palate, with more green apple, hints of a little spice or earthiness, long and smooth finish. Not super-complex, but a ridiculous bottle at $19 and am happy I let it sit in cellar for a few years. One bottle left, and while it's not likely to fall apart anytime soon, it's probably not getting better from here.

(Fourchaume Les Vaulorent LA CHABLISIENNE) Chablis DEAL Dear Friends, I still get comments about the 2001 La Chablisienne Montee de Tonnerre that we offered last year at a ridiculous price - many of our oldest customers think it is the best price/value of any wine we’ve ever offered. After consuming 3-4 bottles of it in the last few months it’s tough for me to argue. The wine has aged in a spectacular way and I almost lament not having more in my cellar - oh well. That is until today. After bugging them ad nauseum about more of their severely underrated 2001s and being told the Montee de Tonnerre was a on-off occurrence - this is the result (a year later): their top 1er wine for great price. It would have been quite remarkable to have the regular Fourchaume for this price but this is the golden nugget, the Les Vaulorent. If you don’t mind drinking beautifully made 88pt wines at less than half price that have been immaculately stored and may have aged into something shimmering and brilliant (like the Montee de Tonnerre), this is your wine. It’s not often that we get to drink Chablis 1er as our everyday wine but at this price it almost qualifies. Based on the response history with this type of offer and the small quantity we have to work with, that’s all I will say: ONE SHIPMENT ONLY at this price directly from the source with perfect provenance (this is not via the grey market) HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for absurd price/value: 2001 La Chablisienne "Fourchaume Les Vaulorent" 1er Thank you, Jon Rimmerman Garagiste Seattle, WA Burg9886
