An Oenophile neighbor gave me this partial bottle to try; yes, same one who gave me a partial bottle of Williams Selyem Pinot Noir - Ferrington, Turley Zin - Duarte, all 90 pt +. (Where Does he get these?)
Single-vineyard, single (so far) vintage, Zin from a one-acre block of 100 year old vines (locally known as 'Spice Block' due to the different varietals planted & resulting 'field blend') in the Maple Vineyards. Characteristic Zinfandel: Mixed red fruit on the nose, elevated alcohol (14.8% abv), medium-body, pepper and spice on the palate. Mouth feel seemed a bit 'rustic' and the tannins seemed somewhat harsh. Over the next couple of days this coarseness had disappeared; replaced by fragrant cherry and raspberry on the nose, carrying over to the palate with a nice dose of spice and a pleasant tannic grip.
My friend continues to 'bat 100' (oops, make that 1,000). This is a legitimate 90 pt plus contender; but not one to 'Pop & Pour.' Maybe because it's young yet, I suggest decanting with extended airing before serving.
