  • Excellent wine but way, way too early. Opened ~6 hours before drinking and it needed that time plus some before it started to show. Super acidic and closed immediately on popping the bottle, really started to open up to a beautiful, floral, red and purple fruit wine towards the end. Needs at least 6-12 hours if opened now, or let it sit for a bunch more years

  • I decanted this one too much — 9 hours open air plus 10 hours in the wine squirrel. Still delicious but had lost some of the vibrancy

  • Notes after a couple hours' decant plus overnight sealed in the Wine Squirrel:
Wow. Spectacular wine. It's like the THX sound, played on a basket of cherries, performed in your mouth -- there are a thousand notes but they come together in a laser-focused package with weight and body but no noise or flabbiness. I'm not sure I've ever had a wine that was so powerful but also so pure and so focused. Absolutely mouth-filling (the opposite of the PnP experience, see below) and just enough tannins to give weight and structure without being noticeable at all. I can't emphasize enough the power + finesse dichotomy -- it has all the punch-you-in-the-face-with-fruit power of a big extracted Napa cab but the steely focus of a cool-climate Chablis.

    Notes after first opening:
    95. Excellent wine. Maybe a little too excellent -- the thing I'm trying to decide is whether it's just a vulgar crowd pleaser (it's absolutely crowd pleasing) or if it's truly excellent. It's a big super concentrated fruit-and-everything bomb. Tons of cherries, every aspect of the cherries. Other dark fruits. Interesting (lack of) weight and body -- for such a big extracted wine, the finish and even the mouthfeel are surprisingly light. Not like a pinot where the overall feeling is light, more that it hits big but has an empty space in the middle of your mouth (sides are still big) and then the finish is brief. Which in this case is actually a good thing -- a big lingering finish would definitely push it into the vulgar territory. Tannins are light. It's well integrated and certainly drinking well now but I could imagine it lightening up more with more age and mellowing out and becoming more clearly excellent and less possibly vulgar.

Ok, I'm sold. It's excellent. And it's certainly excellent for the price -- if it was a Bordeaux or a cult Napa cab it would be at least 3x as expensive.
