  • Saturday get-together: A more needly showing than the previous bottle just a few months ago, with any complexity or breadth held at bay by the sharp and edgy stone/chalk and twiggy? elements firing off behind the foxhole at the overly juvenile black cherry core that has little chance of advancing on the skirmish line. It provides cut for BBQ oysters in a way that is utilitarian and helpful for the food, but beyond that, it is still in arms-crossed mode right now. Leave these alone for at least a few years. In contrast, the 2016 Jolivettes carries much more depth, weight, and appealing texture than its younger sibling at this point. Try the 2017 again in 2025.

    2017 vintage. 0g/L dosage. 07/2021 disgorgement. 100% Pinot Noir.

  • An evening with good food, great people and amazing wine (Where the silence is longed for): Aromas of washed peaches, young and clean pears, subtle stone notes. Flavors are very similar to the nose but with a bit of watered down minerality, like stone that has been smoothed and worn down because it has been sitting under a waterfall for decades. This seemed to be holding back on something.. expected a bit more complexity but I have a feeling that some time in the cellar should remedy this. 92-93+

  • After digging into my recent arrivals of Maillart Champagne, I decided to try the 2017 Jolivettes, 2017 Mont Martin, and 2014 Chaillots Gillis. Punchline: Anyone who is holding these bottles should continue to do so. All performed solidly and have the requisite elements and comportment to become more complex and interesting versions of themselves; but, for now, the effervescence is pronounced, the fruit is linear (though beautifully focused), and the finish is direct and confined to a narrower scope of expansion. The layering in all of these wines has yet to be developed.

The Jolivettes shows Pinot Noir typicity fairly early on in consumption, but it is a more reserved and tense version when compared to the 2016. Much like the Mont Martin, the Jolivettes has a lot to learn about depth and profundity. The black cherry flavors are washed away a bit by the waves of effervescence and chalky minerality, making for a more serious profile in its current state. This will likely always be a more chiseled bubbly next to its year-older sibling. Hold until 2024+. 93+ points, with certain upside in a few years.

    Disgorged 7/2021. 0 dosage. 12.5% ABV. BdN - 100%PN.
