Community Tasting Notes (5) Median Score: 89 points

  • Nose has elements of pineapple, gravel, and key limes. Initial flavors on this are a bit tart and green. Light body, very little finish but lingering bitterness on the back of the tongue. Reminds me almost of a sauvignon blanc, but falls flat as a chenin, for me.

  • Opened and drank in 1 day. Chilled, then bottle-decanted for ~1 hour.

Nose dominated by citrus (lemon, hint of lime), and featured some pesky green notes reminiscent of freshly-cut grass. Taste does not vary greatly from aromas, but acidity and hint of effervescence made it refreshing nonetheless. Rather light-bodied. Not too dry, as some South African value wines can be. Finish was rather short, but pleasant. I felt this bottle lacked balance, as alcohol was clearly distinguishable on the palate--and not in a good, warming way, but rather an obtrusive, undesirable way.

Overall, I would call this a crowd-pleaser. It is not at all complex, but would be palatable in a variety of settings. Easy to drink, very little is objectionable about it; however there is also little to write home about.

Regarding QPR: Since I got this for <$6 as part of a promotional pack, I am happy. The $18 "market price" for this wine is pretty ludicrous; I would be disappointed had I paid >$10 for this bottle

  • Nice flavor. Much bolder than a Sauvignon blanc. Flavor strength of Pinot Grigio but fruit with nut flavor

  • Medium lemon/lime color. Pronounced aromas of papaya, pineapple, ripe pear, honeysuckle, stone and guava. Dry palate with medium (+) acidity and medium body. The tropical fruit and crispness/minerality of this wine are delicious. The finish is medium in length and I’m really enjoying the mouthfeel. Really yummy, especially chilled on this hot summer’s day. We are grilling jumbo prawns on a bed of crisp salad. Drink now. 90 points for this $18 effort makes it a 5 star wine. Ps. this varietal is also known as Steen in South Africa.
