Final Raymond bottle sampled from the reserve collection. This time a Napa Red Blend.
On the nose, sour cherry, oak and leather. Initial sips were ripe cherry, tart blackcurrant and leather. This opened up in the glass slowly and had some plum and vanilla notes lingering after the first few sips. Nice finish of tart dark fruit and oak.
Med bodied, grippy tannins, med acidity and slightly sweet. This is more to my taste than the Cab Sauv. Smooth and well balanced with the right amount of sugar. Very nice one.

Very appealing and vibrant medium(+) intensity nose, with powerful red currant, caramel, chocolate, red cherries, and hints of licorice, espresso, tar, blueberry bramble, and cinnamon. In other words: complex.
The first impression of the palate was of tinglingly high acid, but it settles down into integration as you drink it, with mild, grainy but present tannin. Flavors of tar and dark cocoa powder on the sip and cherry on the medium-length finish. Dry but with just a hint of sweetness (though that could have been the high alcohol), and very smooth.
This was smashing with 1000-day old Gouda, which made the slight sweetness shine.
