  • Pleasantly surprised at how much better this bottle had lasted than the previous I tried from the same vintage earlier in the year. Definitely past it's prime but still thoroughly enjoyable.

  • Much better than the first bottle - poured a clear crimson-red. Nose of mushroom, earth, with a hint of cherry. Great length, and a really moreish flavour profile. As good as it will ever get now, and given the cork lottery, you'd be advised to drink sooner than later.

  • {cork, 13.3%} Evidently there were two Vat 6 pinots for the 1999 vintage; this is the one labelled "4 & 8 Vineyard" (per the photo). The cork had one little streak running two-thrids of the way up the side - otherwise looked pretty good (but not top-class by world standards). This looks just right for older pinot; brick/orange in colour, quite translucent (except for a little stirring up of very fine sediment; wine not decanted). The nose is wonderfully aged; still some strawberry fruits, but rent with wet leaves, compost, and cured meat/delicatessen aromas. It's more reflective of classic Hunter terroir than merely of pinot. And its quite intense too, the bouquet has no trouble getting out of the glass. As promised by the back label, the palate is dominated more by acid than tannin. It is astringent, but this is more just drying-out than oak influence, which is negligible. Although it coats the tongue quite well, and the balance is otherwise good, it's a bit one-dimensional; the volatility is creeping up to the point where the palate is quite prickly, and the length of finish is rather short. Light-bodied, but rather intense, for all that. Honestly, probably better a few years ago. One to drink up now.
