  • Very much 2019 on the nose: immediately approachable, ripely fruit-forward and quite fragrant. Darkish cherry in on the forefront with some cranberry, herbs and minerally tones on the background. Very appealing, if not hugely distinct, however there seems to be just the slightest VA raising its head which for me is a plus. On the palate this likewise shows rich, dark fruit on the entry. Probably thanks to the low 12.5% ABV this is on the lighter, leaner end of 2019s which is very much to my liking, however paradoxically I still find this to have just a bit of warmth to it. There is not much in the way of tannins but there is still a grippy sensation towards the finish and great lift. Despite the fruit expression there is great brightness to this and nice stoniness about the character. The vintage probably brings more heft to what I reckon could be a ballerina of sorts in cooler years. Overall this is another great, well-rounded regional 2019 Burg that should be bought in quantity given the general price hike of vintage 2021.

  • Beautiful Pinot Noir

  • Classy lil Pinot here. Airy and fresh aromas of sweet dark cherry, blackberry, and strawberry, plus wood grilled meat, dried pine needles, nougat, a little beet and blue flowers. Supple and smooth on the palate, light and fresh, lots of ripe fruit nuance, nice savory and earthy stuff too. Excellent but easygoing, this should be worth following for 5+.

Just as nice on day two.

  • The Pinot Noir comes from plots totaling 0.97 hectares in Volnay on the lower part of the slope. The average age of the vines is 30 years. There you will find deep soils with clay layers on a limestone base. Fermentation took place in open vats for two weeks and aging in barrels for twelve months. The percentage of new wood was 10%.

    Medium garnet red, slightly transparent.

The 2019 Bourgogne Côte d'Or is a fragrant, yet quite dark and ripe Pinot Noir with enticing notes of crushed dark raspberries, wild strawberry jam, cranberries, a bit of yeast and warm forest floor.

On the palate, the Bourgogne Côte d'Or comes across as substantial and ripe, round and silky yet with a fine grip and bite from a structuring acidity that runs fresh through the dark berry fruit. In the background you'll find a subtle spice of wood and underbrush, dark bread crumb, dried herbs and a bit of iodine. This is an absolutely coherent and beautiful estate wine from Volnay, as uncomplicated as it is balanced.
