  • Nose leads with dark and red fruit. There's some oak and pepper lurking behind the fruit. Up front the palate delivers rich fruit with cherry, blackberry, plum and strawberries. Medium bodied with velvety tannins and a little acidity on the finish (but not much).

  • Intense and savory Pinot. Very deep red-purple, clear and yet almost opaque. This look is good prep for the palate.

On day 1 (chicken sausage microwaved breakfast burrito) we poured from a room temperature. The nose and palate had savory cherry (cherry pie?) and red currant but also a menthol-like quality that was very appealing. Medium+ body with sharp acidity. Similar on day 2 with Ribeye, but the menthol was less prominent at cold temps.

  • Very savory pn. Intense on the pallate, though nose was intially very muted. Opened up after 45 min in decanter.

  • Deep Cherry & Blackberry with Leather. Delicate & refined with subtle power. Fresh acidity with soft Tannins. Long fruit filled finish with hint of Mineral. Easy drinking Pinot that is great on its own or pairs well with most foods.

  • Hell yeah, this was awesome. It was only a bit behind the Francois Lumpp version (same vineyard) 2018 I loved so much. That said, I was really struck by how similar this was to the Francois cuvee, a unique style of Burg that seems to be shared in the family style (they must be related?), or maybe by the vineyard/vintage, or some combination of the two.

In a way this felt like one of the very rare examples of an old-world wine made in a very new-world style (much less common than the opposite)- and even more rarely, it feels totally successful in harmonizing richness and elegance. This is a ripe and dark Pinot, almost like an older Russian River example. Deep color, nearly opaque. Dense nose with black cherry, blueberry, blackberry, sometimes almost blackberry pie. The Burgundy vibe is still there with a higher-pitched meaty note, very subtle umami lending the perfect accent to the ripe (but fresh) Pinot fruit.

Palate is about the same- ultra ultra delicious dark berries, a touch of vague oak with baking spices, and some brighter savory tones in the background. Acidity isn't the focus here, but it's certainly no slouch- it's pretty wild how they achieved a persistent freshness while allowing the fruit to express itself so loudly. Nice little tannins too, lending some density but feeling like velvet.

I guess this isn't meant for long aging, being a little more about softness and immediate enjoyment than more traditional burgs, but it's really striking and extremely well-made. Great QPR around $45, not in the highest echelons of PN for that price, but close. I have plenty of experience with Givry (we enjoy it at least once a year for our anniversary) and this was the second best after the Francois Clos du Cras.
