  • My prior note applies. Paired very nicely with porcini risotto.

  • It's been a year and a half since I tried a bottle of the 2017 Garabel Barolo. There is nothing stewed about this one, but my word, at uncorking the tannins are still very robust.
The nose offers attar, raspberry, and a slightly fungal loaminess.
After a brief flirtation with cherries and raspberries on the fore palate, the tannins clamp down and never loosen. Hints of dried herbs and earth peak out, but only just barely.
I think the first bottle may have been a bit heat stressed -hence the stewed plum. This bottle has a fresher feeling... at least until the secco scirocco swallows everything up.
I have the rest decanting until dinner. Hopefully that tames it.

    Initial rating of 89.

Two hours of decanting and the rating bumps up 3 points. This bottle just hit the spot with maiale affumicato brasato al latte per cena. Paired perfectly, and the tar & attar really blossomed as the tannins receded.

    Final rating: 92

  • Not bad but definitely not a favorite. The Barolo acid/tannic structure is there, but the wine has bitter green notes and is lacking in fruit and overall flavor on the palate. The nose is light and simple. Not disappointed for the 15 bucks that I paid for it at Costco, but I wouldn't buy it again. The Kirkland Signature Barolo is much better for the extra few bucks if you are looking for a bargain Barolo.

  • Quite acidic and tannic. Needed decanting. Tastes young but good. I think this will be very nice when it is aged properly.

  • Very tannic and closed down at first -it definitely needed time to decant. It has a nose of baking spices, plum, and a touch of mushroom. After about 1.5 hours, it opened up and revealed a full bodied palate of gently stewed dark stone fruits, a hint of that mushroom funk again, firm tannins, and a lingering tingle of a finish.
I think this could improve with a couple more years, but decanted is rather nice now.
We had it with smoked meatballs and a contorno of radicchio. It was a good pairing.
