  • Aroma is fruity Raspberries, spring greens, earthy, & pine tree. Gorgeous clean round palate of spicy liquorice & lingering cherries. So enjoyable.

  • One of the endless Clarendon reds again. Quite powerful on the first pour, with real Syrah intensity - roasted meat, cinnamon, rich black fruit. The palate offers a smooth, almost fully developed flavor profile with loads of tertiary notes complemented by hints of freshly picked berry fruit. Finish is medium and quite soft. Ok, but nothing I’d come back to.

  • 2005 Clarendon Hills Syrah tastings (1 of 6)

This is the first of a series of tasting of 2005 Clarendon Hills Syrah from the different single vineyards, ranging from Cru to Grand Cru levels.
Baker Gully Syrah is a Premier Cru level wine for Clarendon Hills.

The nose is very gentle and elegant. There are aroma of rose petals, blue berries, thyme with overtones of slightly toasted oak, dried meat, licorice and hints of leather. 30 minutes is sufficient to open up the wine. The nose followed through to the palate which is fresh, lively and clean. Mid-palate has great strength and finish is smooth with nice rounded acidity to stretch the profile of the wine. The wonderful grilled meat flavours filled the palate the moment you swirled around in your mouth. A medium to full bodied wine with a gentle nose. Probably goes very well with food than on its own. This just lacks the fine harmony, silky texture and concentration of its bigger brothers. Although it is drinking well now, I suspect it would have been better if it is consumed within 10 yrs of vintage to enjoy the higher concentration of fresh fruit and energetic personality.

  • Still a lot of fruit, smooth finish and nice balance.

  • Excuse me rhapsodizing. This is a 9 year old wine at its peak; still vivid blackcurrent fruit persisting through every glass, a gentle tannin finish and balance..... I always think of Clarendon Hills as archetypal, in-your-face, aggressive fruitbomb... Now the bomb has matured into an appealing cassis-dominated, pepper finishing luxuriant mouthfull. Maybe serendipity, this seems to be at its peak just now, and I am grateful for the chance that had me open the bottle tonight (2 hours open, venturi'ed). Throwing a reasonable amount of sediment.
