The Mosconi, similar to the Ornato, undergoes 30-day maceration in stainless steel with the majority of the wine aged in large oak botte with a small proportion spending 12 months in barrique (not sure if any of it is new). The 2018 Mosconi is relatively elegant and vertical in its profile, in comparison to the darker, more brooding Ornato. While it is already fairly approachable, which may be due to the barrique softening the wine, it still has a strong Nebbiolo signature that is not really masked by the gloss or aromas of new oak. While I would not call this a purely traditionalist wines, I would say this would fall within the camp of tasteful modernism. It isn't soft or plush, but has really tension and energy.

A pretty new wine in the selection of Pio Cesare (first vintage = 2015). The 2018 Mosconi is loaded with energy and a young spicy fruit. A bit nervous yet (absolutely typical for young Mosconi Barolos), it possesses already a good breadth. All elements are put impeccably together with the robust structure and tannic spine. The vintage character certainly provides a fair amount of brightness and freshness here. Tart red berries, bright cherry, dried herbs, tar and the site typical notes of (white) pepper and piment rise up. The gathering of zest, fresh fruit and Mosconi power is alluring. Can’t wait to taste more vintages in the future (also mature ones one day...). Aged for appr. 30 months in cask (French and Slavonian oak) and a small part in barriques.
