  • Surprisingly dark in colour (should have read the back-label - we were warned). Rather muddy fruit on opening the screwtop. Rather better for breathing for a couple of hours, and on the second day. Eventually produced quite a focused but simple fruit, which was pleasant enough to quaff, but hardly typical, deep or complex. As the other taster remarked, you'd be better off with a zweigelt for less money.

Tried it because it had been reduced from £15 to £10. Not what I'd hoped for. Won't buy another one, even with the large reduction.

  • From 75cl screwcap, P+P, no development over subsequent 2 hours. Oh dear. Here we are back in the bad old days of German Spätburgunder. There's some primary black cherry and blackberry fruit, but as the latter, untypical, PN fruit descriptor suggests, this low-acid, low-concentration, brown-coloured jug wine could be a mongrel blend (the Austrians might call it a "CuvÉE") of practically anything, perhaps Zweigelt-based, maybe with some Syrah or Dornfelder (or even the feared Domina) to bulk it out. Absurdly overpriced at 15 GBP retail (Waitrose in Oxford) for such mediocre quality, this ought to shame whoever chose it—for what is, after all, supposed to be a premium UK supermarket chain—given the immense strides made in German PN in the last decade. Perhaps Waitrose's wine buyer should stop by at Ziereisen or any one of a dozen other excellent modern producers to see what they are putting on the local market at around 10-12 EUR retail including tax. Add on the UK duties, and there would still be honest profit to be made from selling a quality product... One to avoid. 83P
