Community Tasting Notes (1) Avg Score: 90 points

  • First this was just a little over the hill, and thus a slightly lower score but still felt it was giving enough to go ahead with scoring. Mushroomy, cassis, dark fruits and old wood hit the nose. Quite distinctive and similar to the region and perhaps more particularly the maker in this case. Still somewhat tart and drying yet has definitely lost much of the fruit that is showing to the nose. Perhaps it needed a proper amount of air, as some nice rounding and development occurred over the course of an hour or so. Nice wine, I like this maker and their old and complex style.

(Puech Haut Clos du Pic) #1; COLOR-dark; NOSE-very unusual; Horseradish; an Balsamic Vinegar meets motor oil; little plum component; massive nose; TASTE-this wine is absolutely breathtaking; Huge--I mean loaded w/ fruit; a gorgeous plum w/ a squirt of ketchup in the middle; lots of beautiful white pepper components; great length; jalapeno pepper dancing around on the finish; little pickle juice; amazingly firm tannins; should last between 13-25 years; needs another 5 years of cellaring; the balance is exceptional (borderline hedonistic & Old World); GV-93+
