  • This Etna nerello red, very recognisable as such, needs to be savoured with patience. While my first impression after opening was one of red fruity simplicity, I am rewarded with complexity and length after a couple of hours. Indeed, it has developed fruity flavours as different as ripe peach, zesty orange and succulent cherry. While at first it was merely tart, I am now met with aromatic, elegant acids with a soft, balsamic aspect. The dark earthy, smoky overtone was there from the beginning though. A hint of dried herbs and cloves like spices and fine, well integrated tannins complete the picture.
Funny to see, in CT as well as in professional reviews (Decanter and Parker vs Suckling, Jancis Robinson and Gambero Rosso), the split between good and very, very good. As if some reviewers weren't patient enough...

  • East Etna always delivers great value at low prices.

The color is a brilliant red ruby, anticipating vivacity and movement. The nose has good (medium+) intensity, with red cherries dominating the fruit component, moving toward dry spices (cinnamon, nutmeg, a hint of pepper) and dried herbs (mostly bay leaves).

The palate has a strong entrance, with sparkling acidity (medium+) and medium tannins that continue to dominate the medium palate as well. The tannins become slightly too grippy in the end. The aftertaste (medium+ longevity) brings back fruit cherry notes.

This is a pretty well-made wine. It's not perfect, nor it tries to be. It's an entry-level Etna Rosso. At its current price point (less than 15€) it makes an absolutely spectacular drink.
