Drank with friends - so didn’t have a lot of time for the bottle to open up. Stone fruit, a little tangerine, good structure, surprisingly linear, also some noticeable astringency that was remarked on. This is good, I think if Benanti left it on the lees a year or two more in the future it could give very good grower bubbly a run for their money. I had a small glass left the second day and it was quite improved. Astringency had gone away, the body was far better integrated with the structure and linearity, and it was really just lacking ‘toastyness’. Very cool expression of a very strange grape for the application in phenomenal yet unconventional soils for the style. I really think with a few more years of iteration (and maybe some collaboration with grower vintners) this could be every bit as interesting as anything from the Cote’s de Bars at least. Hope to get more of a handle on the terroir with subsequent bottles.
