  • From a magnum. 11% alcohol.

Medium-deep lemon-yellow color. The nose feels ripe and evolved with aromas of beeswax, some lemon marmalade, light apple jam tones, a little bit of wool sock, a hint of ripe nectarine and a faint touch of raw potato, which I occasionally get from old Rieslings. The wine feels dry, light-bodied and pretty structured on the palate with brisk, moderately evolved flavors of lemony citrus fruits, some evolved creamy and browned butter tones, a little bit of steely minerality, light nuances of beeswax, mineral hints of wet rocks and salinity and a touch of ripe apricot. The high acidity lends great sense of focus and energy to the wine. The finish is dry, long and palate-cleansing with a moderately evolved aftertaste of honeyed richness, some tart notes of lemony citrus fruit and Granny Smith apple, a little bit of steely and saline minerality, light evolved nuances of creaminess and butter, a hint of beeswax and a touch of apple peel bitterness.

A very nice, sophisticated and tasty old Riesling. I was expecting the wine to be in a much worse condition, since the cork wasn't in a perfect shape and at some point the wine had leaked a drop or two. However, the wine hadn't been oxidized or otherwise damaged - or at least it didn't feel like a wine any older than what you could expect from a Riesling +30 years old. It was either sitting firmly on its plateau of maturity, or it was just starting its decline (I'm not a fan of those notes of wool socks and potatoes some older Rieslings tend to develop) - but in any case, still in superb condition. Terrific stuff. Priced more or less according to its quality at 63,20€ for a magnum.
