Tasting at Carter in Calistoga -- our host did a great job and generously presented much of the lineup. No sign of smoke taint in any of the wines. I found most of the wines here to be overtly sweet, fruit dominated and remarkably similar. They are dense pleasure-bombs but lacking in site characteristics or complexity (seem over-worked). Maybe this will come in time. Evidently Mike Smith started these wines but Bevan "finished" them. This Three Kings was fine and in line with other 2020's in the lineup. Too sweet and simple for me at this price.

I thought the 2019 Three Kings bottling was the best in years and I still feel that way, however the 2020 vintage is top-notch and maybe just a hair behind the 2019 at this early stage (6 weeks in the bottle). The color is a deep ruby purple, with a delightful nose. On the palate dark and perfectly ripened dark fruit, blue and blackberry, cassis and a touch of plum. This is a big, full bodied Cab that is solid, focused, very nice extraction and energetic. The 2020 Carters did not disappoint and the Three Kings release is a worthy wine indeed. 95+/96 Points
