  • The flagship Rebula of Ščurek, made with fruit sourced from a +50 yo vineyard. First the fruit is crushed and only free-run juice is collected, then approximately 1/3 of the grape skins is added to the must and left to macerate in 500-liter oak casks. After ten days of maceration the grapes are gently pressed and the wine is moved to French and Slavonian oak barrels (70%) and acacia casks (30%) to age for 24 months. 13% alcohol.

Medium-deep and subtly hazy lemon-yellow color. The nose feels rich, ripe and subtly sauvage with complex aromas of waxy funk, some creamy notes of oak, a little bit of perfumed floral character, light apricot tones, a hint of honeydew melon, a mineral touch of wet rocks and a faint bretty whiff of old leather. The wine feels ripe, concentrated and still surprisingly firm on the palate with a rather full body and very intense flavors of sweet red apples and cantaloupe, some savory spicy tones, a little bit of waxy and subtly leathery funk, light floral nuances, oaky hints of woody spice and creamy richness and a touch of stony minerality. The relatively high acidity lends good sense of freshness and structure to the wine. The finish is rich, juicy and persistent with a complex and quite intense aftertaste of ripe peach and cantaloupe, some creamy oak tones, a little bit of chamomile and almost hoppy herby tones, light stony mineral nuances, crunchy hints of golden apples and lemony citrus fruits and a touch of sweet oak spice.

Very impressive, structured and focused powerhouse-Rebula. Normally Ribollas (or Rebulas) can be a bit simple and linear whereas most Ščurek whites are relatively big, broad and heavy in style. Somehow these two elements manage to even out the negatives from each other, only contributing their best sides to the wine: true to the Ščurek style, the wine is quite bold, rich and full in body, but the fresh, acid-driven nature of Ribolla manages to keep the wine surprisingly fresh and structured despite all that skin contact and oak influence that do lend quite a bit of weight to the wine. This was a very impressive effort and my favorite of the Ščurek wines we tasted. As the overall style is still very youthful, I can imagine this wine will continue to develop and improve for many years more. Priced according to its quality at approx. 40€. The wine received three points from the nine participants in our tasting of 12 Ščurek and Vie di Romans wines, finishing on fifth place.
