Wow. Beautiful wine. The standout of the night at a wine dinner. A blend of their multiple cabernet vineyards and blocks. This was showing much better than the Carter Cellars Beckstoffer Grand Daddy of the same vintage (which Mark Carter, the vintner, agreed with). Can't believe how well it's drinking so young. Muted flavors on the nose, but it was a PnP. Dark red in color. On the palate, a mix of red and more black fruit. Balanced acidity and tannins.

Tasting at Carter in Calistoga -- our host did a great job and generously presented much of the lineup. No sign of smoke taint in any of the wines. The Carter Carter was one of two wines I admired at the tasting for its restraint, energy and actually tasted very different from the rest of the lineup. Red fruited and lacking the overt sweetness that many present upon entry. The finish was long and lively. Mouthfeel showed plenty of viscosity without being heavy. Nice complexity at an early age. Not quite as good as some past vintages but a standout in 2020.

It's not fair to rate this one so critically after tasting the Beckstoffers ahead of this one but we did and although good, not quite as impactful as the last tasting. A wonderful blend of the best remaining (Beckstoffer fruits) that make for a young but amazingly early drinkable Cab. Bold dark purple-black color. On the palate, Dark berry fruits, cassis, and black cherry fruit. Energetic and ready to go, I like it but not as impactful when drinking after the big (Beckstoffer) dogs. More like 95 Points this time.

I like this 2020 Carter Cab, despite only a few weeks in the bottle, 96 points as a pop and pour. The color is a rich purple/ blue and violets on the nose. Palate wise, dense dark ripe fruits, black cherry, black and blueberry fruits, cassis, cocoa dust, with a touch of plum. This vintage is bold, full-bodied with excellent extraction, flavors and a lingering finish. Although not fully mature, I think this wine is drinking really well now and its future prospects are very bright. A classical Napa Cabernet with structure, elegance, energy and full flavors. 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from some of Carters best fruit sources. With time this bottle began to unwind and show better, perhaps 97ish as the night went on. This is a blue chip wine in my book.

Beautiful a touch of acidity, very mellow and balanced wine. Elegant but with a touch of fruity power. One of the best from 2020 showing.
