  • Cedar sauna and berry pie nose. A lot of currant sweetness, cocoa, and even some cherry cola kind of flavor. Not the most complex wine, but one in excellent condition that speaks of its variety. Tchelistcheff consulted on this wine from Cold Creek fruit, this predates the Woodinville Chateau by a year. Cool back label too!

  • Had a really special experience with this old CSM cab. Started out with stinky and sour notes of cherry. Air helped unravel what was underneath, which included dried cherry and currant fruit, herbs and a slight dusting of cocoa. This old-timer also paired very well with a tasty al pastor burrito but was very enjoyable on its own too.

  • Wine of the day. As it was pointed out to me a week before this tasting, these old Chateau Ste Michelle Cabs are a whole different animal from what you would have in your glass today from the “Regular” bottling. Indeed, a mere 33 years young, and I was amazed, no, in shock, how this thing has held together. Fireworks of aged cedar on the nose seduced and enchanted both experienced taster and novices alike. The palate wasn’t quite as dramatic as the nose, but it did leave a favorable impression of cassis fruit and sharp acidity. Almost no fading of structure or presence with the two hours that it sat in the decanter. A memorable experience and many thanks to my old man for sharing this with the group.
