  • Notes: Uniform pale brick red color proper of old pinot noir. Tight nose needing swirling and airing to get the shy aroma of blackberries and straw. Light body but big tanins; medium-low acidity. The aromas of berries are more black than red, and introduce also dried figs and perennial leaves. Long punch of alcoholic finish.

Impressions: I opened the bottle expecting a declining wine or even flawed. It was not so. Although I think it developped all it has to show a couple of years ago, it holds tannins and alcohol to preserve it another 3 years. It has been a real surprise to see a bold, even macho, wine from an old pinot noir; and a Beaune Villages at that! Its only drawback is a certain lack of elegance due to the imbalance of the tanins and some lack of integration; however, this is a very good wine which elevates any food and situation. It is also an extraordinary example of tipicity to its grape and terroir, adding to it the improvement that aging can do to this grape, when it is well treated by a winemaker.

  • I would echo the first poster...apt description. Would love to try this wine in a non-terrible vintage. As it is, this wine gives a nice puzzle to solve...trying to extrapolate what it would be like in a successful vintage. Definitely a thinner, lighter style Faiveley has become famous, or infamous for. Very good acidity. Much better nose then palate...quite a bit going on in the nose with various woodsy smells and cherry tossed in. Think palate which ends quickly. Still, fun to try. Probably wouldn't spend my own cash on it again.

  • Dinner at Gunther's (Purvis Street, Singapore): Very simple village, much better on the nose than on the palate. As would be expected from Faiveley, good typicity, with clear Beaune characteristics of cherry, flowers, ferrous mineral and a touch of briney, earthy funk on the nose. Briney. Very simple on the palate though. Decent balance, but just cherries, a short finish and a light grip of tannins. Ok for a quaff, but not enough strength for the really excellent and flavourful duck margret - a pity. Time to drink up - not sure this is going to improve anymore.
