Miscellaneous Notes from Italy (mostly Champagne and Nebbiolo); 10/31/2015-11/6/2015 (Piemonte and Milano): Medium ruby with gentle lightening at the very edge. Crscendo of aromatic volume and complexity-tobacco, brown spice, anise, and deep cherry fruit. This also has everything on the palate-medium weight, sappy, expansive feel, fruit that builds and sweetens over time, perfect acidity, and a good amount of hidden tannins that creep up on the finish. Very, very young, but it is in such great equilibrium that it shows wonderfully. Unquestionably great, but great in such a different way than the '08 Monfortino yesterday; that was a wonder of perfume and finesse, while this impresses with power and sheer strength of material. I envy those who will get to enjoy it at age 40, when the complexity will fully arrive.
No real formal notes (had at a restaurant, short decant). This is a delicious and amazing Barolo! Nose is beautiful rose, loads of them, in all different stages of flowering. Such a floral wine! Cherries and ripe red garden berries. Complex, perfumed and airy, still deep and concentrated. Like a top level Chambolle. Some more mature tones lurking underneath. Amazing! Silky palate, yet with power and backbone. Great balance, and in a sweet spot right now, and will be for another perhaps 20 – 40 years? Wow! (97 – 99)
Tasted blind. Had this amazing wine just a month back, and tonight it showed quite different from in May. Nose was incredibly floral, loads of red roses and rose petals, perfume, sweet ripe raspberries and strawberries, red sweet candy fruit, cherries and some tobacco. Palate was silky and fine, very balanced with fine ripe fruit, great length and acidity with fantastic structure. My guess was Cannubi Boschis from Sandrone. Not as breathtaking as last bottle showed, but very, very good. Perhaps bottle variation? Came along with more time, and at the end of the evening, this showed more of its real colors, but still not up to the level of the last bottle.
